The evolution of the arrow shaft began when bow and arrow sets were first invented. Wood was initially the material of choice as it could be shaped and straightened into shafts. Experimentation revealed that straight shafts flew more accurately.
Aluminum shafts followed in the evolution of arrows. They allowed for greater consistency with regards to weight, balance and flight. They also have a greater resilience to forces applied to them, especially from a compound bow.
When carbon arrow shafts were first introduced is was believed that the shafts were brittle if broken, they would splinter into long, sharp pieces. The evolution of Carbon shafts resulted in the production of spiral fiber-wrapping and cross weaving of carbon, greatly increasing durability and strength. Carbon arrows have the ability to maintain their straightness, are lightweight and strong.
