Crossbow
Crossbows are bows that are mounted on a stick a tiller or stock) with a mechanism that holds the drawn bow string. Very light crossbows may be drawn by hand, but the heavier types need a mechanical device to assist the draw. As their draw length is shorter than other bows, there is a need for a greater amount of draw force to store the same amount of energy.

The arrow-like projectiles used with crossbows are called bolts. These are far shorter than arrows, but are a great deal heavier. Depending on the strength and characteristics of the crossbow, there is an optimum weight for bolts to achieve maximum kinetic energy.
There are different variations including recurve, compound, pistol repeating, multiple bow system and bullet crossbows and they are classified according to the acceleration system, size and energy, degree of automation or projectiles.
