Good laminated longbows may be made of wood or other modern materials. A wooden bow should be treated more gently and protected from excessive moisture or dryness. They may shoot as well as fiberglass longbows, but are more susceptible to denting or breakage by abuse. Bows made of modern materials can be left strung for longer amounts of time whereas wooden bows need to be unstrung immediately after use.
Traditional archers and some tribal communities still use wooden or fibreglass laminated longbows for recreation and hunting. The practical advantages, when compared to a modern recurve or compound bow are that; it is lighter, quicker prepare arrowsfor shooting, and is quieter when shooting. However, the modern bows shoot faster, more accurate arrows.
